Gigabit Networks refers to
networks that have 1,000 Mbps data transfer rates. Most businesses today use 10/100 Mbps (Mega Bits Per Second) networks. With recent price drops in Gigabit technology, it is feasible for businesses installing new networks to use Gigabit technology as a starting platform. The overall cost difference between installing a 10/100 Mbps network and a Gigabit network is relatively low and does not impact the overall cost by much. Gigabit networks provide far greater speeds than 10/100 MBps networks. In addition, power users that require higher data speeds can upgrade to Gigabit technology relatively easily and low cost. Large companies that do not wish to invest in upgrading entire LAN's can segment and upgrade power users so that they can take advantage of higher network speeds. (See below.) Users that would greatly benefit by upgrading to Gigabit technology include Graphics, CAD/CAM, Audio/Video and other high bandwidth users. If you use any of these applications and store your data files on a server, Gigabit technology can greatly reduce the time it takes to open, save and backup your data. |
